Permanent identifiers guarantee a stable link to an online resource. They establish a permanent correspondence between a resource’s identity and its web location. There are two main types: permanent “object” identifiers (for publications and data), and permanent “contributor” identifiers (for authors and institutions).

Identifiers are permanent unique alphanumerical codes attributed to authors, outputs, or research units, to unequivocally identify an author or associate author, and to attribute scientific output and research products.

Researcher Identifier, Author Identifier

This code unequivocally identifies the author and attributes authorship.

Advantages :

  • it avoids frequent confusions between authors with the same name;

  • it associates the various identities a researcher may use to sign publications;

  • it provides a way of linking a researcher’s output managed by different sources;

  • it dispenses a researcher from re-entering information about profiles created in the various databases they may use;

  • it acts as a unique key facilitating searches in databases using this identifier.

There are various research identifiers: ORCID (non-proprietary and international) and site- specific identifiers: IdHal, Researcher ID (WOS), Scopus Author ID (Elsevier)

Research output identifier

A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a unique and permanent chain of characters conceived for the Internet. It provides a way of identifying, referencing, citing, and providing a permanent link to all types of output: publications, research data.

It is often attributed by default by the publisher when output is deposited. Otherwise contact the SOcle team.

Research unit identifier

HAL uses l’idRef (produced by ABES), RNSR (a national repository of research units produced by the Higher Education and Research Ministry) and ISNI (International Standard Name Identifier). The ROR (Research Organization Registry), an international identifier, has recently been added to this list.
