It is essential to take legal and ethical questions into account from the beginning of any research, and this is especially true in the context of open science in which project leaders or funding bodies wish to share publications and/or the underlying data.

These issues relate to the purpose of collecting the data required for the project (who owns the data, what are the conditions for using it), citation, and sharing sources over the Internet or in a publication.

Addressing the right questions from the outset allows you to establish your research on sound footings, respect the applicable law (relating, for example, to health, personal or sensitive data, and vulnerable populations), ensure the security of subsequent dissemination of research outputs, and transfer proportionate copyrights to publishers.
